Case hardening 1018 or 1020 - practicalmachinist

Oct 01, 2003 · Thread Case hardening 1018 or 1020. Heat treater's can be brutal and ding's are common. If you have long parts make sure and state on the drawing and P.O. that the parts are to be racked vertically. Also call-out a straightness spec. ie Parts to be straight to .005" after heat treat. You should also specify a core hardness usually 35 to 40 Rc.

heat treating cold rolled 1018 mild steel - I Forge Iron

Mar 05, 2009 · Cold rolled steel is stronger than hot rolled because it's work hardened. If you try to heat treat it, the first thing that will happen is that it will anneal, and you'll lose that extra strength. As others have pointed out, 1018 doesn't really have enough carbon to heat treat.

How soft is 1020 steel? BladeForums

Mar 03, 2011 · Well generally, the 10xx steels have a min/max range of carbon that tends to vary by the steel maker. 1095's acceptable range is 0.90-1.03% Carbon, so the median is more or less .95% hence the naming. 1020 would therefore be only ~.20% and would be as tough (but also as incapable of taking a keen, hardened edge) as iron.

These results showed that the hardness of AISI 1020 steel can be changed and improved by different heat treatments for a particular application. From the microstructures we have found that the annealed specimens with mainly ferrite structure give the lowest hardness value and highest ductility while hardened specimens which comprise martensite give the highest hardness value and lowest ductility.

Improving Quench Hardening of Low Carbon Steel

Hardenability depends on the carbon and alloy content of steel (9), but maximum hardness depends only on %C content. The higher the carbon content is the greater is the hardness of martensite. Figure 1 showing martensite start and finish temperatures of carbon steels suggests that low-carbon steels can be hardened by formation of martensite.
